Big turn out to Support Sisters Adventure Park

Group Photo - everyone keen!

Momentum is growing for the proposed Sisters Beach Scooter/Bike/Skate/Basketball park with around 70 locals gathering at the site on Sunday to view and discuss the plans while enjoying a Barbeque. Waratah Wynyard councillors Celisa Edwards and Darren Fairbrother also lending support.

The project which is being actioned by a working group of local members of the Sisters Beach Community Association and the Waratah Wynyard Council would be built on the current hardstand near the creek. 3D Concept drawings from Park Designer Simon Williams of Concrete Dreams were on display and the feedback was positive.

Jono Vincent from SBCA said “the current hardstand is the only paved area in Sisters beach where kids (and adults) can ride bikes, scooters and skate boards and play ball games was inadequate as the surface is uneven and pools with water for much of the time and lacks a basketball hoop or fencing.

“The Council has committed 70 grand in this year’s budget to fixing the surface, we thought that if we could get some more funding from a government grant and maybe some corporate sponsorship and donations, we could build something that the kids will really like.”

Ben Saward SBCA treasurer said “the plans were yet to be costed but estimated the project would need between $150 000 and $200 000 to complete. We have had a lot of support for the project with some indicating they will help out with discounts and in-kind support with construction.”

Kid’s from as young as 2 rolled in on all kinds of wheeled craft and were eager to give their opinion on the current facility and the new plans.

Nina (10 yrs) said “it fills up with so much water that when you ride your bike through there you get wet. It (the new plans) looks really good and fun I want to ride my skateboard on the ramps.”

Chelsea 13 and Nellie 15 said “we can’t play basketball because puddles are there all the time and the ball won’t bounce, the new court will have lights too, that will be good in the winter when it gets dark so early.”

Donny 12 mumbled through a mouth full of sausage that “it would be awesome.”

The September weather held off for most of the event before unleashing a torrential down pour that had people scrambling for shelter under marquees, umbrellas and trees but failed to dampen their enthusiasm.

The working group hope to have funding secured and construction commenced in early 2020.
